This page contains comments directed at people who might consider buying one of my prints. I hope it answers some of your questions. Most people, quite understandably, can't imagine why anybody would buy a photograph since it's just a piece of paper and we're constantly bombarded with images in magazines, newspapers and TV. They have a point, and I really don't have a very good answer other than to say that there are people who take pictures and others who buy them. That's not an explanation, just a fact.

* Why two different sizes for the same price?

 

 Photo A. (above) 12"x 16" - if the image can not be cropped because it fills up all the space then I use this oversize.

 

Photo B. (above) 11"x 14" - if the image can be cropped because unessential space surrounds it, I may use this size. I try to provide you with the best possible solution depending on the specific photograph you select. Some collectors only want standard 11"x14" prints. If this is your preference, please indicate with your order, or contact me by e-mail first and I will gladly offer my suggestion regarding the photographs that interest you.

 

To assure consistent results, the prints are done either by me or by a lab technicians who works directly with me. Sometimes prints must be redone to correct color imbalances. Color is more demanding technically than black and white, but it is the only medium I use because b/w portraits ignore skin color which I find important to my work which strives to document beauty in all of its essential diversity.

 

Note: No Biron logos or other identifying markings as displayed on this web site, will appear on any of the photos and ink-jet prints ordered.

About Ink-Jet Prints....

 

Ink-jet prints have both the quality of a watercolor (pure color, ink interplay) and of a photograph. The paper I currently use is Kodak® ink-jet photographic quality semi-gloss paper. The colors directly applied to the surface of this paper by my Epson Stylus Color II* printer tend to be bright and lively - usually brighter than in a photograph. The prints look good framed, especially when displayed under an oversized matte.

 

It can take me considerable time to create one of these computer images using Adobe's Photoshop 4.0 and Extensis® PhotoTools 1.1. On the other hand, it may take hardly no time at all. It all depends what I'm trying to do. Some effects are instantaneous, others are the result of elaborate combinations of procedures. There's considerable trail and error.

 

The technology is fun, but expensive: high-speed and Ram intensive computer, both negative and flatbed scanners, CD-Rom burner, ink-jet printer. Actually, the basic printers are quite reasonable, but the supplies (paper & ink) are not. It takes special paper to hold the inks properly. It must neither absorb too much ink nor allow the inks to interfere with one another and blur the image. It's a complex technical problem requiring special chemically treated paper that accepts properly the blending of four basic color inks with black. The paper cannot easily be substituted. As the inks are different for each brand of printer, so is the paper.

 

An issue of genuine concern in regard to ink-jet prints is their longevity. It is still too early to know how well the colors will hold before they begin to fade. They are probably not as stable as photographic prints which if properly taken care off (kept matted under glass and out of direct sunlight). Remember, color prints can easily bond to glass surfaces, especially if the climate is humid, so always use a matte board (preferably one that is acid-free) to keep it away from the glass surface.

 

If you need any further advice on handling prints, I will gladly provide it. No consultation fee. However, I am not in the framing business. Most of my customers, have their own idea about framing or else store their prints for occasional viewing. One client in Asia has three or four frames, easily opened from the back, which he uses to rotate his photos every few weeks. Sort of a mini in-house exhibition. Rather nice I think. He always visits me when he's in San Francisco to see what I'm doing.

 

* a new Photo printer, especially designed for photographic prints that uses a 6-ink rather than a 4-ink color cartridge, was just released in May 1997 which is said to create prints with even greater photographic quality. However, as with the photocopy technology sometimes what is perceived to be less accurate can yield extremely interesting artistic results that might not be achieved by a 'more perfect' machine. In short, this technology, like individuals, has various personalities through its reincarnations.

If you would like an ink-jet of any of the photos shown, e-mail me. Many photos do not lend themselves well to ink-jet prints for various reasons. But I'm always willing to experiment. Since customer satisfaction is an essential part of this business, there's absolutely no obligation on your part to ask. If the print should not turn out well, I certainly wouldn't expect you to buy it. No one ever buys a picture who is not fully satisfied with it. My customers are always satisfied. And I appreciate their patronage as I would yours.
