la poésie symboliste

"Le transparent glacier des vols qui n'ont pas fui!" - Mallarmé
The transparent glacier of flights which haven't taken off!
Un coup de dés jamais n'abolira le hasard.
A throw of the dice never will abolish chance.

- Mallarmé "Coup de Dés"

Le point extrême où se sont aventuré l'esprit humain.
The pinnacle of intellectual risk-taking

- André Gide on the "Coup de Dés"

American born, Betsy Kawamura lived in Tokyo until the age of 12 before her family relocated to Honolulu, Hawaii. In her twenties, she traveled extensively in Europe where she studied painting in Norway and later in Paris. She was the recipient of a prestigious arts grant from the Norwegian Cultural Foundation in Oslo.

In the US, she received an award for photographs exhibited at the San Francisco Women's Art Gallery. Kawamura has also exhibited her photos at Spectrum Gallery and at Mad Magda's Russian Tea Room, both in San Francisco where she now lives and works.

Directly influenced by French haute couture designers Rifat Ozbek and Romeo Gigli, as well as by sketches and photos of ballet costumes from Diagliev's ballet russe, Kawamura is a make-up artist who also creates all the costumes and jewelry used in her photographs.

An accomplished classical dancer, she studied in Tokyo, apprenticed with the Honolulu City Ballet, and performed in the corps de ballet of the San Francisco Ballet. She speaks Japanese, French, Norwegian, English and some German.

The work of this eclectic artist includes paintings, photographs, jewelry and various other creations which can be found in private collections in Paris, Oslo, Barcelona, Honolulu, and San Francisco.
